Saxophonist Dave Pietro, jazz guitarist Mark Whitfield and sound engineer/guitarist Joe Lawlor joined Dave Matthews Band at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday, December 21. Pietro made his appearance on “Jimi Thing,” while Whitfield took the stage for “Mercy” as well as an encore rendition of “Crash Into Me.” It was the first time that both musicians has sat in with Dave Matthews Band. Joe Lawlor, on the other hand, has joined the band for five of their last six shows—though technically he is almost always “joining” them as their live sound engineer. Lawlor has played guitar on “Corn Bread” during four of those five sit ins, including Friday night. In addition to the guest appearances, the show also included a notable “When the World Ends,” which the band opened with for the first time since September 8, 2003 in a nod to the Mayans’ alleged “end of the world” prophecy.
