Phil Lesh made another surprise appearance at his San Rafael, CA venue Terrapin Crossroads last Wednesday. Held in the club’s free bar space, the show featured Terrapin Family Band, which boasts Grahame Lesh (acoustic guitar, vocals), Brian Lesh (mandolin, vocals), Ross James (electric guitar, vocals), Scott Padden (standup bass, vocals) and Alex Koford (drums, backup vocals). At the end of the Terrapin Family Band’s set—which part of a weekly residency at the venue—the elder Lesh emerged to sing harmony vocals on “He’s Gone,” “I Know You Rider” and “We Bid You Goodnight.”

Then, on Saturday night Lesh joined the Terrapin Family Band for an announced show in the venue’s recently renovated Grate Room. The event was timed along with the Lighted Boat Parade along the San Rafael Canal, and featured a mix of material. The ensemble nodded to Terrapin Crossroads with a cover of Bill Bryson’s “Girl at Crossroads Bar” and performed “Detroit Turnaround,” a song off the new American Jubilee EP (that ensemble features Scott Harvey, Ross James, Brian Lesh and Scott Padden). They also offered Grahame Lesh’s “Find A Way,” the traditional “9 Pound Hammer” and a slew of material from the Grateful Dead catalog.

As previously reported, Lesh will join God Street Wine for Terrapin Crossroads’ first 2013 West Coast Rambles in January.
