Yonder Mountain String Band kicked off their sold-out four night New Year’s Eve run at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO on Friday night. The first set included covers The Beatles’ “Come Together” and AC/DC’s “Little Lover,” as well as a rendition of the bluegrass standard “Big Spike Hammer” before ending with “Steep Grade Sharp Curves” sandwiched between “New Horizons.” The second set opened with a rendition of the Civil War era tune “Elzic’s Farewell” and also featured covers of John Hartford’s “Steam Powered Aeroplane” and The Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing.”

Jason Carter of the Del McCoury Band joined Yonder on fiddle for the entirety of their Saturday night show. The first set got going with “Pretty Daughter” and also included a rendition of the old bluegrass classic “Maybe You Will Change Your Mind.” Carter took over vocal duties on “Vamp in the Middle” at the beginning of the second set, which also included covers of Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers’ “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down” and John Hartford’s “Steam Powered Aeroplane,” as well as an encore version of Joe Maphis’ “Dim Lights Thick Smoke.”

As previously reported, Yonder Mountain String Band will play two more shows at the Boulder Theater tonight and tomorrow.
