My Morning Jacket headlined the On the Beach benefit concert at Asbury Park, NJ’s Paramount Theatre last night. Organized by three New Jersey natives—noted photographer Danny Clinch, concert promoter Tony Pallagrosi and producer/longtime Relix writer Tim Donnelly—the evening benefited Hurricane Sandy relief. Other confirmed acts included: Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Joseph Arthur, Nicole Atkins, River City Extension, Clinch’s Tangiers Blues Band and The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon. New Jersey radio host Matt Pinfield served as the evening MCs.

The evening featured a number of collaborations. During Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s opening set, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James sat in two songs he recorded with the band, “St. James Infirmary” and “Louisiana Fairytale.” In addition, Steve Earle joined in on “The City.”

My Morning Jacket welcomed several guests during their set, as well. After “Wordless Chorus,” Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined MMJ for the rest of their entire encore. The five-song segment included “Highly Suspicious,” Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell,” local hero Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart,” “Dancefloors” and the anthem “One Big Holiday.” During the Chuck Berry cover, New Jersey native Nicole Atkins—who first met the members of My Morning Jacket at Asbury Park’s Bamboozle Festival in 2004—sang backing vocals. Clinch also played harmonica on the tune.
