The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical FELA!, which deals with the life of legendary Afrobeat pioneer and political activist Fela Kuti, will begin its national tour later this month. The cast, which now includes Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, will make its first stop at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC January 29-February 10, before heading across the country. The tour will make stops in Detroit, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Seattle, Oakland and more. FELA! features musical arrangements by Antibalas trombonist Aaron Johnson and other members of the group have played in the show’s pit band. The musical was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2010 and managed to take home trophies for Best Choreography, Best Costume Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
