The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has finished constructing and installing the first ever permanent solar array for a music festival. The 50kW solar photovoltaic system will support about 20% of Bonnaroo’s energy needs by generating more than 61,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The project was funded by “opt-in” contributions that attendees selected during the ticket buying process. The “opt-ins” have existed for the past three years and have been used to fund the compost pad, the garden and last year’s mobile tower of power. A $1 fee was also added to the price of a ticket last year in order to build up funding for additional onsite green initiatives. The 2013 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival will take place June 13-16 in Manchester, TN, with the initial roster of artists expected to be announced over the coming weeks.
