Previews begin on February 23 and the musical will open on March 21. The play’s website has launched the “Your Hardbody Handbook,” a micro-section featuring information on the musical. Included in the section is the Anastasio/Green collaboration “I’m Gone.” The song can be streamed here

A few numbers from the musical, including “Burn That Bridge” and “My Problem Right There,” have been performed by Phish.

As a lover of both phish and broadway – I had high hopes for this. But all signs point to this being a BOMB. I’ve heard from multiple people “in the know” that its just awful… and honestly – when you take a step back and think about what it is… I’m not surprised. It seems to cater to the least common denominator of everyone involved. The recipe:
Find a story about middle america – but don’t bother writing one, just base it on a documentary. Get Trey Anastasio to write music in a genre that is the antithesis of everything that makes him a special musician. Write song lyrics that are so lame it makes you want to cry (see link above)
“I work at the UPS – the job is pretty good I guess”
...come on…. Then direct it as campy as possible (again – hearsay from people I know who’ve sat in on rehearsals) It just seems like a bust in the making.
And it sucks… because I think Trey’s music – writing in his element – could be viable on a broadway stage. Gamehendge and the like.. But in this vehicle I just can’t see it working. It’s like “spring time for hitler” or something.. All that being said – I’m going to see it for sure.
And I hope I’m wrong..
But I’m pretty sure I’m right..
