Galactic to Play Benefit for Houseman

Galactic will headline a benefit concert for their longtime friend and former bandmate Theryl “Houseman” DeClouet. The multi-band bill will take place at New Orleans’ Tipitina’s on March 23. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Revivalists, Papa Grows Funk’s John Gros and June Yamagishi, and several unannounced special guests will perform during the night. Of special note, DeClouet will sing lead with Galactic during their set.

DeClouet relocated to Chicago after Hurricane Katrina took everything he owned. The goal of the evening is to assist DeClouet in his efforts to re-settle in his hometown of New Orleans.

DeClouet is the featured vocalist on Galactic’s first five albums (including Coolin’ Off and Crazyhorse Mongoose). This collaboration was an extension of a friendship started back in 1990, when Robert Mercurio and Jeff Raines met DeClouet at the legendary (and now defunct) Benny’s nightclub, well before the two had started Galactic. Houseman officially left Galactic in 2004.

Is there a webpage that is accepting donations?
I enjoyed hanging w/ Theryl in Columbia SC in the 90’s. Hopefully, NO will be able to say “guard your weed, the Houseman cometh”. BG

Boy do I miss the days when Houseman was with Galactic. I love those years and really miss the guy. I too would donate if they set up a web site.

I’m a little confused…Galactic plays everywhere non-stop year round. They make a lot of money… why would you quite and go to Chi? Especially in a time of financial struggle?

Theryl had some very serious health issues, which I believe led to him needing to take a break from touring to focus on his health. He wound up in Chicago after katrina destroyed his home, he has friends up there who looked out for him, helped him with a place to live and have helped him try to get healthy again. Galactic played a benefit for him in SF a few years back to raise money for Theryl’s medical expenses, which were sizeable. And Yes, Galactic works hard touring their asses off, and they do alright, but it ain’t NBA money, and between Katrina and hefty hospital bills, Theryl was between a rock and a hard place. I can’t wait to see Houseman back in NO!!
