SXSW Panel to Celebrate Miles Davis’ "Lost Quintet"

A South by Southwest panel will celebrate Miles Davis’ 1969-1970 quintet. The so-called “lost quintet”—which consisted of Davis, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Chick Corea, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette.—was never recorded in the studio. As previously reported, the quintet’s music is finally able to reach a wider audience with the release of Miles Davis Quintet — Live in Europe 1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 2, which features unreleased recordings from Davis’ 1969 European tour. The quintet and the new compilation will be discussed at the panel, which will take place on March 14 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm in Room 13AB of the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX. You can check out our review of the Miles Davis Quintet — Live in Europe 1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 2 here.

Yes – this will be an awesome panel! Ashley Kahn, an NYU professor, NPR writer and musicologist will moderate; Nell Mullderry, owner Boss Sounds/product manager on Miles Bootleg Series Vol. 2; Vince Wilburn, Jr. (musician/producer, nephew of Miles); Meghan Stabile, editor of Revivalist and The Pharcyde (Imani and Bootie Brown). DJ Logic is special guest and there will be giveaways. We’re hoping Wayne Coyne has time in his schedule to grace us with his presence! :) K
