Questlove, John Medeski, Bill Evans, George Porter Jr., Tash Neal, Natalie Cressman and The Shady Horns joined Soulive last night for the sixth installment of this year’s Bowlive at the Brooklyn Bowl. The first set got going with “Aladdin,” which was followed by covers of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Manic Depression” and the Beatles “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” The London Souls’ Tash Neal came out for “Get Back” before The Meters’ bassist George Porter Jr. took the stage for a rendition of The Impressions’ “Check Out Your Mind” and The Meters’ “Funky Miracle.”

Medeski, Evans and The Shady Horns took the stage with the band at the beginning of set two and stuck around for the remainder of the show. Evans switched between his tenor and soprano saxophones throughout the evening as he and Medeski weaved themselves into Soulive’s repertoire. The group played a take on Yusef Lateef’s “Nubian Lady” in the middle of the set before being joined by Natalie Cressman for a song. Questlove then made a surprise appearance on drums for a set-ending “Nautilus.”

Bowlive will continue tonight with special guests George Porter Jr. and Leo Nocentelli.
