Jim James Sits in with The Flaming Lips

Jim James joined The Flaming Lips onstage last night. The performance took place at Austin, TX’s Auditorium Shores Stage as part of the SXSW Music Conference. The Flaming Lips used the opportunity to debut their new album The Terror in its entirety. The band also debuted a new, almost post-apocalyptic stage setup and brought Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel onstage for the new song “You Lust.”

For their encore, The Flaming Lips offered a five-song set of material from Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. James—who Lips frontman Wayne Coyne introduced as SXSW surprise guest Justin Timberlake—took the stage in a mask during the anthem “Do You Realize??” to sing a few lines. The My Morning Jacket frontman had opened the night with his solo band.

Even I, who the band relentlessly targets as a fan think the Flaming Lips suck!
