Roots drummer Questlove and longtime Roots collaborator Rahzel played a surprise set this afternoon. The duo took to the streets of New York’s SoHo neighborhood for a 20-minute impromptu and unrehearsed set. They performed on the corner of Prince and Lafayette for a crowd of over 300 fans. The performance previewed the Red Bull Music Academy, which will run at venues throughout New York from April 28 to May 31.

During an interview with Fuse tied to Red Bull Music Academy, Questlove also revealed that The Roots would join Jimmy Fallon when he takes over The Tonight Show in 2014. “We’re not going to The Tonight Show; The Tonight Show is coming to us,” he said. “Basically, it’s going to be the same show. That’s a year from now; anything can happen. Right now, we’re just very concerned and just concentrating on still doing our thing at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. We’re honored to receive the baton and pass down tradition.”

The Roots have served as Fallon’s band since he took over Late Night in 2009.
