Iconic Band drummer, singer and mandolin player Levon Helm passed away one year ago today. Many musicians will likely honor Helm’s memory online throughout the afternoon and onstage this evening. Helm’s studio has also released an official message. They encourage fans to call in Helm or The Band song requests to radio stations around the country at 1:20 PM, the time of the drummer’s passing.

A message posted by his manager Barbara O’Brien on behalf of his studio’s staff reads:

Levon, our memories of you will never fade. We’ll never stop missing you, your brilliant smile, your unmatched sense of humor, your one-of-a-kind voice, your back-beat that can’t be duplicated, your visions & ideas and your mere presence. It was and is an honor to be part of your life. I’m happy that you’re free from all the pains and sorrows. Heaven needed a great band leader. And until we all join you, we’ve got your gun side! Love and miss you – always.

At 1:20 today, let’s all request a Levon song from our radio stations. I’m going to request “Angel Band” – one of Levon’s all-time favorites.
