Furthur honored Levon Helm on the one-year anniversary of his passing last night at Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre. The Grateful Dead spinoff played “Tennessee Jed,” a song that Helm covered on his final studio album, Electric Dirt. In addition, Furthur offered a rendition The Band’s “The Shape I’m In,” followed by Lefty Frizzell’s “Long Black Veil,” a song The Band and Helm often performed. For the encore, the group played The Stanley Brothers’ “Angel Band” for the first time (though the members of the group have performed the song with other projects). A post on Helm’s longtime manager Barbara O’Brien’s Facebook page from yesterday read:

Our memories of you will never fade. I’m going to request Angel Band be played at 1:20 today. No pain. Only peace, Levon.

Furthur will return to the Capitol Theatre tonight. It will be the fifth show of their nine-night run, which wraps up on April 25.
