Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum reunited on Saturday night. The performance featured surviving Planet Drum members Hart, Giovanni Hidalgo, Sikiru Adepoju and Zakir Hussain.

The influential world music collective made a surprise appearance at Berkeley, CA’s Ashkenaz on Saturday to celebrate what would have been Baba Olatunji’s 85th birthday. The evening’s announced lineup featured Giovanni Hidalgo, Sikiru Adepoju, African Showboyz, Rhythm Village and others. Planet Drum won the first Grammy for Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.

Hart is currently working on a new album with his Mickey Hart Band. The release will include a few new songs co-written by Robert Hunter. Click here to hear the new Hunter/Hart song “The Sermon.”

I’m not a huge Mickey fan but I do have to give him credit. He is always working on NEW music….and not just recycling the Deads catalog. I wish Bobby and Phil had ths same commitment to writing new tunes. Then they would truly be taking the whole thing Furthur.

Hart’s world music stuff is second to none inclusive of his world music field recordings and as defined by anything not featuring western vocals, pop or deady music. I regretfully never saw any of his music tours with the Planet Drum guys outside of Furthur tours of the 90s… I admire his unique niche within the world music context and was always surprised he pursued traditional endeavors like playing dead-friendly festivals with dead-friendly musicians…forget the dead stuff Mickey! Come around again with Planet Drum!
