San Francisco Parks & Rec May Rename Jerry Garcia Amphitheater

The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department is evaluating a proposal to change the name of Jerry Garcia Amphitheater to Levitts Pavilion. So far no decision has been made, but some Bay Area residents have started a Facebook group to bring attention to the issue. The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater is the site of the annual Jerry Day celebration, which celebrates the life of the late Grateful Dead frontman while raising money for a variety of causes. The ampitheater is located in McLaren Park in southeastern San Francisco.

If you would like to contact the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, the necessary information is below:

this is absolute bullshit…..... why the hell wold they ever do this? I live in the excelsior and walk my dog there on the regular…. jerry grew up i this hood and that amphitheater is a great memorial to him… Not to mention, he’s probably the most iconic symbol of san francisco other than the golden gate bridge…. its such a peaceful place all but one time a year when they get a bunch of sub par musicians to play jerry music and a billion haight street grateful dead gutter punk scrubs and their pit bulls show up …. cancel jerry day before canceling the amphitheater!!!!!... that place is the shiznit and one more thing that makes San Fran the best city in the US…. we got a amphitheater named after Jerry yo!!!!

JP76 April 23, 2013, 13:47:08

I don’t know who Levitts is – probably someone who deserves a memorial, too – but give him/her something else, not Jerry’s memorial!

Jeff F April 23, 2013, 14:35:27

That is an atrocity. How could SF even think about renaming this theatre? JERRY GARCIA is a founding farther of the SF music scene and his influence will continue throughout time.

Jackie April 23, 2013, 14:40:29

Somewhere behind this idea is a politician and an opportunity to make some money, Guaran f***g teed

Jack Straw April 23, 2013, 15:11:39

If they did this in 25 years, not many of us would be around to protest. Keep fighting the good fight!!

Eric April 23, 2013, 15:12:41

Go ahead and rename it suits, the only memorial I need of Jerry are in my memories and in my heart.

Ben April 23, 2013, 15:17:32

Follow the money, my crunchy friends.

Jerome April 23, 2013, 17:06:53

Not on my watch!

Wilson Linker April 23, 2013, 20:32:45

First they change the name of the Golden Arches Bridge and now this!!!!!

Glenn April 24, 2013, 01:21:53

First of all, I don’t think the name should be changed. There’s too much history. However, if you care enough to make comments, figure out what you’re commenting about. Levitt’s is a nonprofit organization that has built and rehabilitated small amphitheaters in a few cities. They put on a number of free shows, with a focus on latin, world and americana music. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater sits vacant much of the year. I’d love to see the space energized by music that he would appreciate.

“bunch of sub par musicians to play jerry music and a billion haight street grateful dead gutter punk scrubs and their pit bulls show up” Really? Not what i’m hearing or been seeing the last 10 years. let’s talk about it… All – keep advocating…. Tom Murphy

Glenn – Levitts seems like a great organization. And i agree with you, the name should not change. Will there be a compromise?

Terrance April 24, 2013, 07:12:28

Last I heard they did reach a compromise, of sorts. They will rename it the Jerry Levitts Garcia Amphitheater. Thanks to the generosity of the Levitts Foundation visitors can now expect to hear a constant Good Lovin’>La Bamba>Good Lovin’ jam from the new “in residence band”, Grateful el Muerto.

Jane April 24, 2013, 09:40:09

Levitt’s is going to privatize it, taking a public resource private in a way. They say they will add professional lighting & sound…which implies evening shows..Wonder how the neighbors will feel about that?(Outside Lands shows the parks don’t care how the neighbors feel for enough money)...Who will setup this professional equipment? Probably not safety trained union stagecrew I bet…Perhaps they will not want to let people use it whose music or message they don’t like…

lenahan william April 24, 2013, 11:05:31

this ampatheatre is named JERRY GARCIA for a reason, jerry was the living symbol of the spirit of sf he drew folks here to create a new
life style. this city would not be the same today if jerry had never lived here. you must be uninformed to even consider this act of disrespect. RECONSIDER THIS MATTER.!!!

ARobards April 24, 2013, 18:58:39

San Francisco is one of the best cities and urban communities in the country, a fact. The JG Amphitheater is a warm memorial and a fitting salute to a gentleman that brought much love to the city. The “leaders” and supervisors of SF are, however, fucking doosh-bags. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to seriously change name. Fuck them.

Ron April 25, 2013, 12:39:50

I just called and left a very nice message. I hope they hear it :) -Ron from orange county

Stuart April 30, 2013, 12:57:53

They’ll rename it and no longer use it to raise donations to needy groups and folks. They’ll charge some sort of admission fee to make $$. Hasn’t the Dead and Jerry made enough money for this city and the bay area by bringing in tons of folks over decades of good times and music? I say “Why yes, they have!” So let’s honer this man by not selling out for a change. Next maybe we’ll rename Union Square to PG&E square.

Peter Brooks April 30, 2013, 13:11:01

I believe the ampitheater is in the Portola District, not Jerry’s hometown Excelsior which is a few blocks away.

Gambier Place April 30, 2013, 15:00:50

Absolutely not, Levitts. Take your money and your need to put your name on something somewhere else. We don’t want you here in our park. It is the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and that’s the way our community wants the space to stay.

Gambier Place April 30, 2013, 15:08:15

Let’s see… the Levitts are not from San Francisco or the Bay Area… they already have a Levitts Pavilion back east ( they are welcome to produce a show or two, but they are NOT welcome to take over our beloved Jerry Garcia Amphitheater!!!
