During the first weekend of Jazz Fest, five-piece funk collective Dumpstaphunk kept busy with three performances in New Orleans on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday night at 11:30 pm, the group—who are in the midst of celebrating their 10th anniversary—performed a Parliament Funkadelic cover show at the Howlin’ Wolf (“Dphunk Does Pfunk”) with the “New Orleans Horns” sitting in. The funk-heavy performance had an extra fun feel as most of the crowd was dressed in Funkadelic costumes, with even band member Ian Neville joining the party on stage clothed in a diaper with a cape.

The same group of horns joined Dumpstaphunk the next afternoon during their show on the Jazz Fest Fair Grounds on the Gentilly Stage. The set was recorded for AXS TV and will air next week during the channel’s live coverage. The band’s busy Saturday continued with a late night show starting at 11 pm at the Maison, which featured a solid mix of classic Dumpstaphunk and new songs including “Take Time” and “Dancing to the Truth” from their new album. After the show, Ian and Ivan Neville went next door and sat in with Katdelic at the Blue Nile.

The group’s new album, Dirty Word, is on sale at the Fair Grounds and will also be available at the Louisiana Music Factory on May 1 during their in-store performance that will begin at 6 pm. Dirty Word will also be available on Sunday, May 5 during their show at Tipitina’s. The Sunday show is billed as the band’s “10th Anniversary Celebration” and will feature Trey Anastasio Band’s Natalie Cressman and Jennifer Hartswick on horns with The Pimps of Joytime and DJ Quickie Mart supporting. The album goes on sale to the general public this June.

Tonight, Dumpstaphunk will be performing at Tipitina’s as part of the “Instruments A Comin’ Benefit,” which will also feature Galactic, Anders Osborne, New Orleans Suspects, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and others during the all-day event.
