PBS Digital Studios has announced Beat Making Lab, a new, weekly digital program that focuses on youth in developing nations around the globe. The series will run for twenty weeks and is composed of two to three-minute episodes chronicling a music producer and a UNC Chapel Hill professor as they set up music studios (small enough to fit into a backpack) throughout various countries. The Democratic Republic of Congo, Panama, Senegal and Fiji are among the locations where each two-week workshop will occur. The workshops are designed to foster local talent, while simultaneously providing them with the tools and techniques to make their own beats. All studio equipment is then donated to the community, establishing a permanent music lab for future use. The premiere episode can be seen on YouTube, and new episodes will air every Wednesday via the Beat Making Lab channel.
