Toots Hibbert Walks Off Stage After Being Hit By Glass Bottle

Toots Hibbert walked off stage after being hit on the head by a large glass vodka bottle that was thrown by a man in the crowd during the Toots & the Maytals set at Dominion Riverrock Festival in Richmond, VA on Saturday night. The reggae singer received a bloody forehead laceration and was treated at the hospital before being released later in the night. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, police have identified a 19-year old suspect—William C. Lewis—who has been charged with aggravated assault (a felony) and public intoxication (a misdemeanor). Festival organizers have said that they believe the bottle was stolen from one of the mixed beverage stands and was not brought in from outside the vent.

A statement on the Toots & the Maytals Facebook page from earlier today reads:

Toots would like to thank all his friends, fans and family who have reached out to him since the bottle throwing incident in Richmond Saturday Night. After 7 seven stitches and a little rest he was able to perform a wonderful show in Westhampton NY tonite as the 1st show of his acoustic tour. The youth who threw the bottle for no apparent reason is in custody and being charged. Being the soldier he is he will hopefully be able to continue the tour. Check for upcoming dates.

Toots & the Maytals will continue with the second show of their acoustic tour at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, MD tonight. A video of the bottle throwing incident can be viewed above, with the act taking place around 4:25.

Just one more example of the shitty little asshole fans that infest the shows of iconic artists, with absolutely no respect or frame of reference for what came before them. I hope that kid recieved a savage beating before he was arrested. Get well soon Toots!

Are you kidding? Toots & The Maytals are one of the most legendary Reggae groups of all time. Branch out a little John.

if you have ever spoken the word “reggae,” you can thank Toots. Respect.

How would John Mayers know Toots? This site almost never mentions black reggae artists. They save all the reggae articles so they can kiss matisyahu’s ass.
Racist much,

@ratzo: I’m not sure that the lack of reggae articles can be attributed to racism. It is funny and very unfortunate that Matisyahu and Slighty Stoopid are what is considered “reggae” in many uneducated people’s eyes. These bands are garbage. They completely rip off the true reggae artists like Toots, Burning Spear and Jimmy Cliff among many others. Is this due to race? I don’t know. Makes you think though.

I understand that the fact that he was hit by a bottle is mentioned in the title of this article, but WALKS OFF STAGE implies some kind of choice to me at least. Perhaps “left the stage” or something that doesn’t have the history of describing spoiled bratty behavior… Axl Rose “walks off stage”. People “walk off stage” because people in the audience are talking. Toots was assaulted and could have been very hurt.

^Agreed. Should have been titled “Drunk piece of shit assaults reggae legend with glass bottle that could’ve blinded him, and ends the show”.
