On Saturday night, Tea Leaf Green celebrated the release of their new album In The Wake by performing the album in its entirety at San Francisco, CA’s The Independent. Unlike their past releases, the California-based jamband held off from performing any of the album’s songs live before the In The Wake‘s release and debuted the song-cycle from start to finish on Saturday. As an added bonus, many of the musicians who appeared on the record sat in throughout the performance.

During the fourth song of the evening, “All Our Loves,” ALO’s Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz joined in on lap steel guitar, and he remained on stage with TLG for the next two tracks from the album: “In The Wake” and “Give Me One More Chance.” For the latter of those two, London Street’s Lesley Grant came out to add vocals. As Lebowitz and Grant left, Big Light guitarist Jeremy Korpas replaced them on “One Condition’s Enough” and “Space Hero III.” After TLG performed the next song, “Two Parts” on their own, Korpas sat in again on “Don’t Go.” Lebowitz returned to the stage for “Mr. E and the Cosmic Receptacle,” but TLG closed out the debut of In The Wake without special guests on “We Aren’t Done.” For each song in the first set, short films made by Cochrane McMillan were projected behind the band for a unique visual experience.

The second set of the night was a series of older, classic Tea Leaf Green songs, kicking off with two tunes from 2006’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Band: “These Two Chairs” and “Faced With Love,” before Lebowitz once again sat in with the band for “Hot Dog,” from 2001’s Midnight on the Reservoir. The band continued with “I Got a Truck” and “Stick to the Shallows” and was then joined by Jordan Feinstein on keyboards for “Reservoir.” The set ended with “My Oklahoma Home” and “California” before an encore of “Don’t Let It Down” and “All Washed Up” capped off the special night.

Bassist Reed Mathis described the show as his favorite since joining Tea Leaf Green.
