On Sunday night, a multi-generational mix of musicians participated in a benefit for the Big Sur, CA’s Henry Miller Library at Brooklyn, NY’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. The climax of the week-long music, cinema and poetry series Big Sur Brooklyn Bridge, the benefit featured performances by Philip Glass, The National guitarist Bryce Dessner, Real Estate, Tim Fain, Sondre Lerche, Nico Mulhy and Nadia Sirota. The evening was originally supposed to feature legendary songwriter and performer Van Dyke Parks’ first New York show in decades, but he pulled out of the performance at the last minute due to a hand injury.

Glass MCed much of the night and introduced some of the evening’s younger acts, including Real Estate and Dessner. At the end of the show, all of the show’s performers joined Glass onstage for “The Chase,” a number from his opera Orpheus.
