Last night, Tom Petty and The Hearbreakers returned to the Beacon Theatre for the third show of their five-night run at the beautiful New York City venue. Like their previous shows at the venue, the show’s setlist contained a few covers and some bust outs. The band once again began their show with a take on The Byrds’ “So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,” followed by “Love is a Long Road” before continuing with a more varied selection of songs.

The first big bust out was “Nightwatchman,” which was the fifth song of the evening. The Hard Promises album cut hadn’t been played since 1981. The tune was soon followed by the debut performance of “House in the Woods,” from Petty’s 1994 solo effort Wildflowers. In what has now become a regular occurrence on the current tour, the band treated everyone to a crowd-pleasing rendition of The Traveling Wilbury’s “Tweeter and the Monkey Man,” which Petty co-wrote with Bob Dylan.

The next half of the show got going with a cover of Zombies’ “I Want You Back Again,” which the group had not performed since 2001. The next rarity was “Walls,” a tune that Petty and the Heartbreakers recorded for the soundtrack to the film She’s The One, and one that had not made an appearance since 2005. That one was followed by a performance of “Angel Dream No. 2,” which the group also recorded for the soundtrack.

Next came the band’s second-ever take on Little Feat’s “Willin’,” which they debuted earlier this week at the first show of their Beacon run. The tune was followed by a cover of Them’s “Mystic Eyes,” a song that has been out of the band’s rotation since 2010.

The show wrapped up with a run of five songs that have been staples of the recent Petty live experience. The set closed out with “I Should Have Known It,” “Refugee” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream” before the show ended with an encore that consisted of “You Wreck Me” and the classic “American Girl.”
