Mickey Hart to Perform in Israel

Mickey Hart, the only Jewish member of the Grateful Dead, will perform in Israel this August. Along with his Mickey Hart Band, Hart will perform in Jerusalem on August 22 as part of the four-day Jerusalem Sacred Music Festival. The festival runs from August 20-23 as part of this summer’s Jerusalem Season of Culture.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the festival will also feature Afropop singer Salif Keita, Malian duo Amadou & Mariam and Tractor’s Revenge. The article says “they will perform at locations which according to the organizers are ‘filled with spiritual and religious meaning,’ including the Tower of David Museum, Tzidkiyahu’s Cave and the YMCA.”

The version of Mickey Hart Band slated to perform in Israel consists of Sikiru Adepoju, Tony Award winning vocalist Crystal Monee Hall, singer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Bagale, drummer Greg Schutte, guitarist Gawain Matthews, bassist Adam Theis, and keyboardist/sound engineer Jonah Sharp.

politics and music should not mix, you people saying to boycott Israel clearly have read one to many media articles and take that at face value, which shows something about your character.
Ignorance is bliss in your case

He’s starting to look like Carol Channing.

I looks like their first photo search was Jew & Mickey Hart.

G Man May 29, 2013, 21:58:43

Jewish or not. don’t do it Mickey. Join your fellow conscientious artists in saying no to Israel’s Apartheid regime.

I think it’s great that he is coming but Mickey is not Jewish. His father was but then converted to some form of Christianity.

Goldenberg Herb May 30, 2013, 04:42:52

Thanks G Man for mentioning this ‘little’ issue. Very sorry to hear that Mickey’s going there. He could do a little or maybe a lot for peace in the middle east and the world by getting informed and not performing in Israel. It is indeed an apartheid state and should be boycotted. Love Mickey but surely is not informed on this.

Chaim May 30, 2013, 09:43:43

you posters recommending “boycott Israel” are the lowest form of ignorance. how about you let musicians play in Israel, and you go visit Syria, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, or Egypt. Those countries are well-known for their civilized societies of love and acceptance. (sarcasm)

Herb Roo May 30, 2013, 10:00:12

Hey Luke thanks for your insigthful post about Mickey being uninformed. I want to make sure I am up to speed about what goes on too, as I’m sure we all want to be as informed as possible. Can you explain to me please what exactly you think apartheid is, and, what you think Israel is up to? I wouldnt want to support something if I didn’t believe in it one way or another. Gotta stay informed! (also, side note — political parties, guerrlla organizations, terriorist groups, govt s in places all over the world suck. fact. but the citizens in these places shouldnt have to suffer as a result. everyone deserves music)

mutter May 30, 2013, 12:34:41

If anyone can, on artistic merit, pull off playing Israel w/ out offending any side, Mr. Hart can. His world music series speaks volumes about tolerance/cooperation/spirituality….but I recommend against it. Apartheid is apartheid plain and simple. Just my 2 cents Mr. Hart…I will still like your music.

mutter May 30, 2013, 13:33:34

...on the other hand, if anyone is keeping score…the famed Egypt shows & Blues for Allah album speaks to how overdue this particular concert is? ...but I always saw the GD guys as apolitical.

Luke May 30, 2013, 13:51:33

Yes….Herb Roo I take it your inquiry is sincere, at first I wasn’t quite sure if you were being sarcastic (maybe you are). Anyway, don’t take it from me, if you look at the situation – and it’s always been consistent, has never changed – and you look at it honestly, you’ll find that very simply there’s been a US/Israeli illegal and brutal occupation of Palestine for about 40 years. I would like to say astonishingly, but unfortunately I have to say it isn’t simply because of the nature of power systems, but astonishingly it has always been presented in US media as the Palestinians are the terrorists, Israel is defending itself, whereas as a matter of fact it’s precisely the opposite. There are many complicated problems in the world and this is not one of them. It’s extremely sensitive to a lot of different groups of people for several important reasons, but Israel has become by definition an Apartheid state, destroying the lives of generations of Palestinians. We Americans have a special responsibility in this – none of the crimes carried out by Israel could ever be carried without US military, financial and diplomatic support. If the US didn’t give Israel not only the green light but the ability to carry out atrocities, it could and would never do so – it would be completely alone in the world. Not reported in the US media are consistent votes by the UN denouncing has always been the US and Israel on one side and the rest of the world on the other in votes pertaining to condemning Israel and supporting Palestinian rights. There are reasons for that. Also you can look at the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice who have always consistently condemned Israel throughout the decades for its atrocities against the Palestinians, other things you won’t here in US media, and much of western media for that matter. The ‘peace process’ is a groteque bit of fakery, with the enabler of the continuation of illegal acts and violence (the US) acting as the ‘mediator.’ (a bad joke) If we had an informed society this would be ridiculed and stopped but media propaganda is enormous, dishonest and unrelenting in its support of power. Lastly, some will disgracefully and irresponsibly defame an honest assessment of the facts such as this as someone who is ‘antisemitic’ and/or against the Israeli people etc. ..a schoolboy-like dishonest conflation of unrelated things. Criticism of Israel is against its government’s illegal aggression, not of course the people. No justice, no peace. Again, don’t take it from me, anyone interested can easily look up the facts themselves, keeping in mind to steer clear of false propaganda.
Still will love Mickey though, just wish he’d had more of a conscience about this.

YoniSoprano May 30, 2013, 13:56:51

Why are people not more up in arms over Syria? Over 80K people there have been killed, with half of them civilians! Israel ain’t perfect….but neither is America (and I don’t see the anti-Israel peeps on this thread complaining about bands touring in the USA). Ain’t no time to hate people.

Don Durritto May 30, 2013, 14:10:51

Israel absolutely should be boycotted for it’s violation of human rights against the Palestinians. The occupation of the West Bank and Gaza is cruel and just as bad if not worse than the Apartheid system in South Africa, which MANY big name artists boycotted. It’s a bummer knowing that Mickey is not respecting the boycott, but then again, the Dead guys were never really that aware politically. It is not racists to criticize Israel policy and it is not racist to stand up for oppressed people.

BoycottMuslimTerrorStates May 30, 2013, 14:28:32

I am even prouder to be a Deadhead today. I am happy that Mickey has rejected the lies and threats of the most toxic and parasitic elements in our society. Have a safe and spiritual trip, Mickey and to all who are fortunate enough to attend these shows!

Luke May 30, 2013, 14:31:00

It didn’t take long for dishonesty (or maybe worse) with the hauling out of the old ‘anti-Israel’ slogans. Unfortunately.
peace, justice and rocknroll

John Galt May 30, 2013, 15:51:20

“I don’t see the anti-Israel peeps on this thread complaining about bands touring in the USA)” Written by a hate-filled racist scumbag in denial of his own countries crime!

BoycottMuslimTerrorStates May 30, 2013, 17:10:12

If something called ‘Blues for Allah’ was released today there would be a fatwa on the Grateful Dead

Don Durritto May 31, 2013, 09:14:58

They are not lies people, Israel really does committ massive human rights violations against the Palestinians. Yes, it’s true, there are other crimes being committed by other nations. But Israel is special is it not? After all, the USA gives them $8.5 Million in Military Aid PER DAY in order for them to continue with their unjust policies. It’s important to keep in mind that folks who support an Israeli boycott are not anti-semitic but pro-human rights.

Joshua Teitelbaum June 6, 2013, 11:40:18

Bless you Mickey for coming to Israel. And forget all about the negative vibes people are sending your way. Israel is rated “Free” at which is the most respected organization rating democracy in the world. We can’t wait to hear the band! Jerusalem is a very spiritual place and you wont’ be disappointed.
