Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers began their six-night run at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CA last night. In an interesting move, the show had almost the exact same setlist the first night of their recent Beacon Theatre run—the only exception being the lack of a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Carol.”

The concert kicked off with a take on The Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” before moving on to “Love Is A Long Road” and “I Won’t Back Down.” The first half of the set also included a cover of Paul Revere and The Raiders’ “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” and a rendition of the Traveling Wilbury’s “Tweeter and the Monkey Man,” which has become a staple of the current tour.

Petty and The Heartbreakers then got going on the second half of the set with the rare “Rebel.” They then gave the crowd their take on Little Feat’s “Willin’” before “Melinda,” a tune that really highlights Benmont Trench with it’s genre-bending keyboard jam. The band then wrapped up their set before encoring with “You Wreck Me” and “American Girl.”

As mentioned above, the set was almost identical to the band’s May 20 show in New York City. It’ll be interesting to see if the rest of the Los Angeles gigs follow a similar pattern.
