Trey Anastasio Confirms Phish Album, Says Band Is Working Together On Lyrics

Photo via Mike Melia’s Twitter account

Trey Anastasio told PBS NewsHour that the members of Phish have been working together on the lyrics for their upcoming studio album. According to Rolling Stone, the news came yesterday via a tweet from PBS NewsHour producer Mike Melia. The album will be the band’s first since their 2009 release, Joy.

Melia also shared another quote from Anastasio, who said, “A lot of the people that come see us have been coming for 20, 30 years . . . And I know them. A lot I don’t know by name, but there are people that I look out and see that I really genuinely feel a connection to . . . people who stand like 10 rows back and dance that I recognize.”

As previously reported, Trey Anastasio was recently interviewed by PBS Senior Correspondent Jeffrey Brown while rehearsing for his performance at the National Symphony Orchestra. The feature on Anastasio will air in early July, just before Phish kicks off their summer tour.

Though expected, it’s still excellent news. Go Phish!

I predict we will know which lyrics come from Mike. ;-)

This is a Phish Song
This is a Phish song
This is a phish Song
This is a Phish song Here is the chorus Here is the chorus Here is the chorus Here is the chorus Hmmm a little more complex and meaningful than your normal phish lyrics but it has potential

ok, they have been talking about new album for years. I’ll believe it when I see it. The bottom line is that current “Phish fans” hate new Phish music. they just want to hear the same 20-year-old songs over and over every tour.

@ drasticjasper: You forgot: “ now here’s the bridge”

I’d love to see some new Page oriented songs, and a new epic Guyute-esque tune, I like Elastic, but it’s just not a vehicle to a jam as other extensively orchestrated Phish staples. Also, I’d like to see some jazz, Picture of Nectar laid down a foundation for a few solid jams and a 2 or 3 basic songs turning away from studio songwriting and more just in your face funk/etc would be stellar. Good news!!

Not to hate but I dont have high expectations for it…sounds like we might have another roundroom in the works (which by the way wasnt bad anyway) there best stuff always comes from Trey- not the 4 of them

this is good news all around- many of us older phans thought we might have lost the boys for good a few years back- everyone seems healthier, happier and with a summer tour and a new album on the way… this is something we all should be grateful for

I’d love a new song with lyrics similar to First Tube.

Actually i like alot of the newer songs from joy, undermind. Steam, kdf, alaska, undermind, etc. when i listen to older shows i think of all the songs they werent even playing yet. To me the catalog has totally improved with time. And no not tte. That still sucks to me. Phan since 93

The tires are the things on your car that make contact with the road. That’s wicked deep yo…

With the addition of new songs from this album, and some of the “Hands on a Hard Body” stuff Trey says they’ll toy with, we should be hearing a lot of 1st-time-played’s.. I might not ever have to hear Sample in a Jar, again. (always a plus)
