The Heartbreakers will return to Henry Fonda Theatre tomorrow

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ residency at Hollywood, CA’s Henry Fonda Theatre continued last night. The ensemble kicked off the evening with a pairing of The Byrds’ “So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” and “Love Is a Long Road.” The sequence has opened every Heartbreakers show this spring.

On Monday’s Henry Fonda kick off, the Heartbreakers repeated the setlist from their Beacon opening night with the exception of a one-song change. Last night, the band seemed on a similar path at first, rolling into “Here Comes My Girl,” the third song from the second night of Petty’s Beacon run, but moved elsewhere from there.

The rarities continued, however. Petty performed only this year’s second takes on The Last DJ cut “When a Kid Goes Bad” and
Big Joe Williams’ “Baby, Please Don’t Go.” Later in the night, they treated LA fans to their popular Beacon cover of Paul Revere and The Raiders’ “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” their staple version of the Traveling Wilburys’ “Tweeter and the Monkey Man” this year’s second versions of two additional songs: Into the Great Wide Open‘s “Two Gunslingers” and Wildflowers‘ “Time To Move On.” (Petty’s only other take this year on the later song was during the second night of his Beacon residency.) The Heartbreakers also offered their always welcome take on the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil,” a cover they revived for the first time since 1997 at The Hangout last month.

The night came to a close with a hit-packed sequence consisting of “Refugee,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” “Listen to Her Heart” and “American Girl.” In addition, they covered Chuck Berry’s “Carol” for only the second time in 2013.

Petty’s Fond Theatre run continues tomorrow.
