The String Cheese Incident kicked off their summer tour over the weekend with two performances during the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

The first show was a special “sunset set” at the festival itself. The band kicked things off with the newer Kyle Hollingsworth-penned tune “Can’t Wait Another Day” before going into a few appropriately string heavy songs like “Barstool,” “Indian Creek” and “Little Hands.” The set also featured another newer song called “Struggling Angel,” which was written by Hollingsworth and bassist Keith Moseley in honor of their friend Sarah Gewald, who passed away unexpectedly. Things wrapped up a few songs later with an extended jam of “Far From Home” > “The Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) > “Colorado Bluebird Sky.”

The second show of the weekend was yesterday’s late-night gig at the less-than-300 capacity Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO. The concert, which was also one (long) set, featured guest appearances by Vince Hermann, Drew Emmitt and Andy Thorn of Leftover Salmon. The band also debuted a take on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Telluride.”

Thorn was the first guest to take the stage, joining the group for a take on Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues.” Emmitt then jumped into the mix for Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs’ “Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow” before Hermann finally rounded out the guests for “Sittin’ On Top Of The World,” the calypso standard “Zombie Jamboree” and a set-closing cover of Bob Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn.” The trio of guest performers then returned for the final two songs of the encore, “Texas” and the classic “I Know You Rider.”

The String Cheese Incident will continue their summer tour with a three-night run at the Electric Forest Festival in Rothbury, MI this coming weekend.
