Dave’s Picks Vol. 7 to Be Released in August

David Lemieux has announced the release of Dave’s Picks Vol. 7. The new release will feature a recording of the Grateful Dead’s performance at the Horton Fieldhouse at Illinois State University from April 24, 1978. A description of the show reads:

The Grateful Dead may have wrapped up the final show of the first leg of their 1978 Spring Tour in a town called Normal, but this night was anything but! Yes, on this fine evening, the Rhythm Devils shook the room with an exotic tribal assault. Bob found his groove with the slide guitar, contrasting nicely with Keith’s block chording, Phil’s thundering and swooping bass-lines, Jerry’s articulated leads. Heck, they even dabbled in disco, teasing the audience with an unmistakable riffs from “Stayin’ Alive.” What does all this juiced-up, cranked to the max, sonic savagery add up to? Top-level deliveries of fan favorites like “The Music Never Stopped,” “Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain,” and “Ramble On Rose,” a jungle-vibed 14+ minute Rhythm Devils interlude, an over-the-top take on Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” and much, much more.

The three-disc set will be limited to 13,000 individually numbered copies and will be released on August 1. Fans can pre-order their copy for $28.98 here, and a video of David Lemieux discussing the show can be viewed here.

Another great show. I just wish I didn’t already have a great sounding SBD of it.

Despite the senile griping at deadnet and archivdotorg, I’m absolutely thrilled with DL’s opening run of selections; culling from the cream before dipping into the common stock of the 80s. Moreover, his selections for box sets represent equally outstanding samples from inarguably strong tours…next up: Fall ’73!/katie

Lemeiux is great – young, vibrant, enthusiastic, and truly a knowledgeable Head. I agree with you Katie, a Fall 1973 set would be a great next edition. In fact, I think Dave hinted at the Spring 1990, May 1977, and Fall 1973 tours in an interview associated with the release of Europe 1972 a couple years back (though I can’t remember the source). That said, it would appear he is indeed working through that list with the sequential release of boxes – I hope you are right! It is a wonderous time to be a DeadHead.
