Phish Offer a "Heartbreaker" Set in Alpharetta

Phish weaved Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” into a good chunk of their second set last night. The performance took place at Alpharetta, GA’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park just outside Atlanta.

The Vermont Quartet kicked off their show with a fairly standard first set, which opened with “Kill Devil Falls.” In contrast to the bust out-heavy setlists of recent summer tours, Phish has relied on—and refined—a steady rotation of songs this year, adding in a few wild cards each night. Last night’s first set included the summer’s first take on the Round Room epic “Pebbles and Marbles” and the first 2013 version of Rift nugget “Horn.” The rest of the first set primarily consisted of Phish classics like “Bathtub Gin,” “Rift,” “Possum,” “Cavern” and “Run Like an Antelope” as well as the latter day staple “Ocelot” and the revived Rift gem “Mound.”

However, Phish really let loose during their second set. The group opened with a take on The Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll” and moved into Phish’s first—albeit incomplete—cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” since the band’s October 30, 2010 performance in Atlantic City, NJ. Phish moved away from “Heartbreaker” before the song was complete and segued into this summer’s first “Makisupa Policeman.” They continued to segue into “Chalk Dust Torture” and then, “Wilson,” where they teased the “Heartbreaker” theme for the second time. The “Heartbreaker” remained a running gag for the rest of the show, and Phish teased the Led Zeppelin number during an extended, jammed out “Tweezer,” “Harry Hood” and “Character Zero.” Most of the second set consisted of meaty segues, including an extended “Birds of a Feather” and, for the second time this summer, a “Silent in the Morning” that lacked its companion song, “The Horse.”

A cover of The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” that moved into “Tweezer Reprise” closed the night. Phish will return to Alpharetta this evening.

Since the is the only tour of 2013 so far. The bust out of a first play for the year is kind of weird. When else would they have played it, on the imaginary spring tour? Or maybe that imaginary winter stadium tour? That sure was fun.

When Phish could actually cover a Zeppelin tune? Listen to the above link, and then listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ousFDjPrh58 and remember what used to be! :)

If Phish is 1995 sounded like Phish in 2013 July 17, 2013, 17:21:50

They’d all be sitting in cubicles right now. Thank god it was the other way around!

Widespread Panic tour is insane right now… no complaints from their fanbase, just consistent show after consistent show and they are streaming them all free too. That being said I’m a huge Phish fan and can’t wait for Chi and Gorge

For what it is worth been seeing both bands since 1992 and widespread is killin it. I sawthem for the 2 day run at UIC in april and was at all 4 shows at redrocks and was blown away at those fat ole man killin it ( most creative them have ever been ). Have not seen phish this yr but will be going to fri nite at dicks ( u know what they say about widespread “ never miss a sun show “. well same can be said about phish except it’s “ never miss a fri show, especially at dicks “ ). Anyway there is something miss from phish. It was there in 2010 at telluride. It was there in 2011 at UIC and at dicks. It was there in 2012 at dicks. Just dont beleive all the hype. You know….30 yr anniversary, “how exited the boys are to be on tour “, “how happy the look on stage “. I DONT SEE IT and it definitely isn’t showing in there choices od setlist. It reminds me of 2003 at the pepsis center. after that show you just knew it was over. I hope thats not the case and think chicago will turn the tour around. lets hope so.
