Ryan Bingham and My Morning Jacket Celebrate The Band at Merriweather

The traveling AmericanaramA tour stopped at Columbia, MD’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. Opening act Ryan Bingham joined tour staples Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Bob Dylan on the bill.

Bingham also joined the members of My Morning Jacket for a tribute to The Band during their set. Only two days after MMJ frontman Jim James performed with Band keyboardist Garth Hudson at Saratoga Springs, NY’s Saratoga Performing Arts Center, My Morning Jacket brought Bingham out for a cover of The Band’s “Don’t Do It.” Bingham joined MMJ for the same Band cover in Mansfield, MA on Saturday night. Last night, the group also performed My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel’s solo number “Carried Away” live for the first time this summer.

Though AmericanaramA collaboration kings Wilco kept to themselves last night, they did bust out the Being There track “The Lonely 1” for the first time this year. The tour continues in Virginia Beach, VA this evening.

“Baby Don’t You Do It” is a 1964 single by American singer Marvin Gaye. Released on the Tamla label, this song discusses a man who is at a standstill with his girlfriend, who he feels is neglecting his love stating “Don’t break my heart/...I’ve tried to do my best”. The Band recorded the song numerous times under the title “Don’t Do It”. Lead singer is Levon Helm, with backing vocals by Rick Danko and Richard Manuel. The different versions, both studio and live, appear on several of their albums and box sets, including the 1972 live release Rock of Ages.

Merriweather is in Maryland, not Mass.

@check your facts The original song “Baby Don’t You Do It” may have been written and sung by Marvin Gaye, but the version covered by MMJ was the one as played by the Band so I think the author is well within his/her rights to call “Don’t Do It” a Band cover. All are amazing artists; let’s not nitpick and just jam, homie.
