Phil Lesh and Friends’ headlining set at Bridgeport, CT’s annual Gathering of the Vibes at Seaside Park stretched late into the night yesterday. Lesh was joined by a stellar lineup that featured John Kadlecik, John Medeski, Joe Russo and John Scofield. While the setlist was fairly standard setlist wise, the playing was incredible, with Scofield showing off his guitar chops by taking the lead on plenty of tunes.

The performance kicked off with a “Scarlet Begonias” that played into a take on Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb Blues.” The first set also included rocking versions of “Friend of the Devil,” “Deal” and “Uncle John’s Band” to close it. The second featured a few few great jams like a “St. Stephen” > “Unbroken Chain” before wrapping up with “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad.” The band then came out for a pleasant “Ripple” encore.

Medeski and Scofield got some playing time in together earlier in the day as well when the keyboardist joined Scofield and his Uberjam Band during their set on the Green Vibes stage. Scofield was followed by Lord Huron, who played a crowd pleasing, and surprisingly energetic, set.

Over on the main stage, Railroad Earth got the crowd moving with their psychedelic brand of bluegrass early in the afternoon, with saxophonist Bill Evans joining them for a couple songs. Galactic took the stage next for one of their always-funky sets, and the group got some help from fellow New Orleanian David Shaw of the Revivialists, who contributed his powerful voice to a few tunes. All of the The Revivalists then came out toward the end of the set to help close things out. The Tedeschi Trucks Band also rocked out on the main stage in the band’s first festival stop since hitting the road with The Black Crowes, who will be closing out the main stage on Sunday. Finally, Deep Banana Blackout kept things funky and upbeat into the wee hours during their late night set, which went until 3am.

Gathering of the Vibes continues tonight with another headlining performance from Phil Lesh and Friends, as well as sets from The Roots, Grace Potter and The Nocturnals and Gov’t Mule.
