The String Cheese Incident Bring Some Bust Outs and New Covers to Red Rocks

The String Cheese Incident kicked off their two-night run at Red Rocks yesterday with a couple of bust outs and some new covers of songs by Daft Punk and Ziggy Marley and Sting. While the tour has been pretty heavy on newer material up to this point, the band decided to dig a little deeper into their catalog.

The first set featured some fan favorites like “Mouna Bowa,” “Close Your Eyes” and “Freedom Jazz Dance” before wrapping with a jam that consisted of a “Sing A New Song” that played into “Don’t Say,” and then finally a set-closing, old school “Restless Wind.”

Things got pretty interesting during set two, as the band kicked off with the newer tune “Let’s Go Outside” before busting out their first “Tinder Box” since December 30, 2006. That one was followed by another rarity, “Big Shoes,” which was itself followed by a very crowd-pleasing bust out of the band’s classic “100 Year Flood”—their first since 2011’s Roots Run Deep show at The Pageant in St. Louis. The band transitioned out “100 Year Flood” with some “Boo Boo’s Pik-A-Nik” teases before playing into “Far From Home.” Next, SCI debuted a cover of Sting and Ziggy Marley’s 1988 release “One World” that segued into a set-ending “Just One Story”

The encore got started with a fun “Shakin the Tree” before going into the funky electro-dance tune “Rosie.” Much to the surprise of everyone in the crowd, “Rosie” ended up sandwiching a cover of Daft Punk’s 1997 hit “Around the World.” There is currently no word yet on whether the crowd’s surprise came from the fact that SCI was covering Daft Punk or the fact that anyone was covering a Daft Punk song that was not “Get Lucky.”

The String Cheese Incident will return to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre tonight.

So… Is “One World” the same song The Police originally did way back in the early 80s? I could imagine Sting just doing a remake of his own song with Ziggy. Also, for anyone who doesn’t know, SCI’s show from Red Rocks tonight (Saturday, 7/27) is being televised LIVE on the AXS channel. It’s channel 340 on DirecTV (check your local listings otherwise) and it starts at 9:45 Eastern. I’m surprised this website has made no mention of the telecast. Or maybe I shouldn’t be. They’ll probably get around to mentioning it tomorrow (LOL).

The music sounded good what I got to hear. One had to be willing to stand in a rain storm to hear it. Not really fun.
