Hoboken, NJ’s Pier A hosted the traveling AmericanaramA tour last night. Yesterday’s stop featured performances by Bob Dylan, Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Ryan Bingham. The evening also boasted a series of surprise guest appearances, including Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes, The J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf, Mott The Hoople’s Ian Hunter and Hoboken, NJ musical hero and The Bongos member James Mastro.

Bingham kicked off the night, but the real series of collaborations started during My Morning Jacket’s set. Partway through their performance, MMJ invited out Gil Scott-Heron collaborator Brian Jackson to play flute on “Steam Engine,” “It Beats 4 U” and the Scott-Heron/Jackson original “The Bottle.” Jackson has performed with My Morning Jacket before, including during their performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2011. For the final song of their set, they also brought out Bingham for a cover of The Band’s “Don’t Do It.”

A slew of guests joined Wilco during their set. Partway through their show, Wilco pulled out Haynes for this year’s first version of the Mermaid Avenue Vol. 2 song “Feed of Man.” Though this was the first time Haynes has performed with Wilco, their guitarist Nels Cline has sat in with The Allman Brothers Band a few times in recent years. Haynes and Cline also collaborated on a 2012 Tommy Bolin tribute album.

A bit later in the night, Wilco surprised the crowd by inviting English R&B/glam rock star Ian Hunter onstage for his Mott The Hoople classic “I Wish I Was Your Mother.” Mastro, who owns a nearby guitar star in addition to his Hoboken music credits, also played mandolin on the tune. Both Hunter and Mastro remained onstage as Haynes returned for a take on “California Stars.” Then, Bingham and the members of My Morning Jacket joined Wilco and their guests on an all-star cover of David Bowie’s “All The Young Dudes.” (The song was made famous by Mott The Hoople). Wilco have covered “I Wish I Was Your Mother” in the past but have not performed the song since a 2001 stop at Chicago’s Abbey Pub.

Though Bob Dylan was slow to embrace AmericanaramA’s open-stage policy, he has gotten into the sit in game during recent shows. For the third time this year, Dylan invited out MMJ’s Jim James and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy for a cover of The Band classic “The Weight.” Wolf, who was in the area for J Geils Band’s opening spots for Bon Jovi at MetLife Stadium, also joined in the sing-along. Though Colin Linden has played lead guitar with Dylan’s band for the past few nights, Charlie Sexton resumed the role of lead guitarist last night (Sexton played guitar with Dylan up until earlier this year and returned earlier this summer after Duke Robillard left mid-tour.)

AmericanaramA continues today at Wantagh, NY’s Jones Beach. Beck will fill in for My Morning Jacket so that James can perform at the annual Newport Folk Fest.
