Phil Lesh and Friends were joined by saxophonist Bill Evans for their entire second set last night at Gathering of the Vibes. Evans joined the band—which featured Lesh, John Kadlecik, John Medeski, Joe Russo and John Scofield—as they returned from their break for a set-opening “Alligator.” The second set was almost one long jam, with Evans filling in the spaces throughout. Highlights included an exploratory “The Other One” sandwiched between “Dark Star,” and an absolutely stellar “Stella Blue” that allowed Evans and Scofield to really shine. The crowd kept chanting “Not Fade Away” through the entire encore break, before Phil returned for his “Donor Rap,” which was followed by “Box of Rain.”

Gov’t Mule played another notable set before Phil Lesh and Friends at Vibes yesterday. The group got some help from bassist George Porter Jr. for a take on The Band’s “The Shape I’m In,” which also included teases of “Get Away” and “Jungle Boogie.” Evans then took the stage for “Devil Likes It Slow.” A cover of the Beatles “Love Me Do” was sandwiched between “I’m a Ram” later in the set, which wrapped up with with a “Funny Little Tragedy” sandwiched between “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Thorazine Shuffle Reprise.” Scofield, Evans and Porter then sat in for a cover of JJ Cale’s “After Midnight,” which was played in honor of Cale, who passed away the other day.

Gov’t Mule weren’t the only act to pay tribute to JJ Cale. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals closed out their performance with a rendition of his classic “Cocaine.” Potter dedicated another song to the guitarist earlier in her set, and she was also joined by Warren Haynes for a tune.

The Funky Meters got the crowd moving early in the afternoon on the main stage, though their set was plagued with sound issues. However the band was able to work around their problems and few in the crowd seemed to notice. Porter then made his way over to the Green Vibes stage following the Funky Meters set to sit in with Steve Kimock and Bernie Worrell.

Things went pretty late last night as well. Thievery Corporations Rob Garza and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy held down the Green Vibes stage from 1am-4am before Papadosio took the stage to play through to the sunrise.

Gathering of the Vibes wraps up today with performances by The Black Crowes, John Butler Trio, Blues Traveler and Max Creek.
