So I was a bit disappointed by the Fela celebration at the Lincoln Center in NYC last week. It was billed as a tribute to Fela and I think it fell flat. Maybe they should have made it known that this was not going to be an afro beat show? Judging by the mass exodus of spectators, I don’t think my opinion was the odd one out. Really not many Fela tunes even played and when they were (except Lady and the closer ITT) they were destroyed… again, in my opinion. Also, why have the man behind the beat, Tony Allen, come to a Fela celebration if he is only going to sit in 2 times!!!! Miles Arntzen from antibalas and super human happiness is nasty no doubt, but with a legend on hand, give up the seat.

Destroyed Steve? Really. I thought it was pretty cool, and that it was more likely people left because free flea tributes don’t necessarily draw a huge crowd in the first place, and the early crowd were just the people who would stop for a few minutes no matter what the band was. You seem fun.
