Phish fans have been getting a lot of surprises these past few shows. The band sent the crowd into a frenzy with a 36-minute, second set-opening “Tweezer” in Lake Tahoe on Wednesday night, and on Friday they played a whopping eight tour debuts at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Not to be outdone by themselves, Phish brought yet another eight tour debuts to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium last night.

The show got started with a run of tour debuts, with the band coming out for their first a cappella number of 2013, “Grind.“The tune was followed by an extended jam of tour debuts, as “Weight” played into the classic “Alumni Blues”/“Letter to Jimmy Page” sandwich. Next came a second a cappella number, the too-rare “Lengthwise” (which got a “tuck” makeover during it’s last appearance in Portsmouth, VA on June 19, 2012), with drummer Jon Fishman leading the transition into “Maze.” The night’s sixth and seventh tour debuts came a bit later in the set, as the band covered ZZ Top’s “Jesus Just Left Chicago” before playing the year’s first “Driver.” The end of the set featured a fantastic “Bug” that segued into the first “Possum” in five shows (longest gap of the tour) before wrapping up with “First Tube.”

The second set got going with an appropriately rocking take on The Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll,” which kept the energy level high before blasting into “Steam.” The middle of the set also featured the sixth “Mike’s Groove” of the tour. While the combo has been filled with five different middle sections in 2013, this version saw the return of the classic “I Am Hydrogen,” making the song the eighth tour debut of the night. The set came to a close as “Fluffhead” segued into “2001” (which saw a reprisal of the now-popular crowd “woos”) before “Slave to the Traffic Light” finished things up. The band returned for an encore take on “Waste,” followed by a show-ending “Suzy Greenberg,” which featured even more “wooing” on the part of the audience.

Phish will wrap up their three-night run at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium tonight before heading to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on August 5.
