On Sunday, August 18 Richie Havens’ ashes will be scattered across the field at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, where the historic Woodstock Festival took place in 1969. This Day of Song and Remembrance Honoring Richie Havens will be free and open to the public.

The Bethel Woods grounds, including the Museum at Bethel Woods, will open at 10am. The memorial celebration will begin at 3pm, with seating beginning at 2pm. Guest speakers include Danny Glover and Louis Gossett Jr. (who co-wrote “Handsome Johnny” with Havens), as well as Woodstock Festival organizers Michael Lang and Joel Rosenman. There will also be special musical appearances by Jose Feliciano, John Hammond, John Sebastian, Steve Gorn with Sanjoy Bandopadhyay and Samir Chatterjee, Guy Davis, Stephanie Winters and Walter Park and Dayna Kurtz, with more to be announced. Havens’ ashes will be scattered across the field at Max Yasgur’s Farm, where he played his legendary show in 1969, following the musical performances.

Tickets to the performance area are no longer available, but anyone who wishes to attend is welcome. Bethel Woods will be running supplemental sound to the concert field, where the scattering of Havens’ ashes will also be visible.

There will also be various events throughout the day, including a drum circle hosted by Jimi Hendrix’s percussionist Juma Sultan at 12:30pm.
