Smithsonian Folkways Releasing Dave Van Ronk Retrospective

A new Dave Van Ronk retrospective, Down In Washington Square: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection is set for release on October 29 via Smithsonian Folkways.

Van Ronk, aka The Mayor of McDougal Street, was a leading figure in the Greenwich Village folk revival of the early 1960s and was the inspiration for the protagonist in the Coen Brothers’ forthcoming film, Inside Llewyn Davis. The three-disc retrospective features 16 previously unreleased recordings by the singer-songwriter, who taught and advised musicians like Bob Dylan, Danny Kalb, Christine Lavin, Jack Hardy, Suzanne Vega.

The set covers the full breadth on Van Ronk’s career, with everything from early live recording from 1958 to his final studio recordings in 2001, just months before his death. The collection also includes his full set from a 1997 concert, which is now available for the first time.
