Pearl Jam’s tenth studio album Lightning Bolt topped the Billboard 200 chart, selling 166,000 copies in its first week according to Nielson SoundScan. This marks the fifth time Pearl Jam has found themselves atop the charts and the eleventh time the band notched a top-10 album. The soundtrack for the Cameron Crowe documentary Pearl Jam Twenty also landed in the top 10 in 2011. 2009’s Backspacer also debuted at number one, making this consecutive number ones for the Seattle rock kings since Vs. and Vitalogy both topped the charts.

Lightning Bolt sold the most copies for a rock album since American Idol winner Phillip Phillips moved 169,000 with his debut The World From the Side of the Moon. Pearl Jam’s tour continues Friday with a show at Hartford’s XL Center.
