Phish Bring Quadruple Encore to Worcester

Phish rolled through the DCU Center in Worcester, MA last night for the first show of a two-night run at the newly renovated venue. The show featured a rare quadruple encore, as well as a bust out of Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s “My Mind’s Got A Mind of It’s Own.”

The set opened with solid takes on Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch” and “Wolfman’s Brother,” before the band went into “Wilson.” Anastasio flubbed the songs lyrics, and apologized to the crowd for singing the same verse twice. The tune was then followed by a 13-minute take on “The Curtain With,” a fun version of The Talking Heads’ “Cities” and “Rift.” A decent “Free” took things down a notch before Phish treated the crowd to their first “My Mind’s Got A Mind of It’s Own” since December 28, 2010, a show that also took place at the DCU Center. “Vultures” and “46 Days” then closed out the relatively short first set.

Trey Anastasio held up a Red Sox jersey as Phish returned to the stage for their second set, much to the delight of the Massachusetts crowd. The band got going with a spacey “Waves” before knocking it out the park on a rocking “Carini” that may have been the night’s highlight. “Prince Caspian” and “Backward Down the Number Line” brought the energy level down before segueing into a “Ghost” that became the first “Dirt” of the year. That song turned into a “Down With Disease” that was eventually aborted in favor Robert Palmer’s “Sneakin Sally Through The Alley. “Cavern” and the always-rocking “Run Like An Antelope” then closed out the set.

Phish started off their encore by treating fans to the first “Contact” of 2013. Instead of opting for a standard encore, the group decided to take things a bit further with a trifecta of “Suzy Greenberg,” the Osborne Brothers’ “Rocky Top” and a show-closing take on Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times.”

Phish will return to the DCU Center in Worcester, MA tonight.
