Last month we reported that Phil Lesh and Friends would be making things interesting with themed shows during their current run, which has already included four nights at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY and two shows at the Best Buy Theater in New York City. It looks like another one of those themes has now played out, as the band—which features Lesh, his son Grahame, Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Jason Crosby, Tony Leone—performed most of the songs from The Rolling Stones’ 1969 album Let It Bleed over the course of Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. The few tracks that the group skipped over were played by Phil’s son Brian Lesh’s band American Jubilee, who have been opening for them during the current run.

On Sunday, November 3, Phil and Friends put their spin on Let It Bleed’s opener “Gimme Shelter” during their encore at The Capitol Theatre. Then on Tuesday night, American Jubilee played the album’s next two tracks, a take on Robert Johnson’s “Love In Vain” and the Stones original “Country Honk,” during their opening set at the Best Buy Theater. Phil and the gang then worked “Live With Me,” “Let It Bleed” and “Midnight Rambler” into their performance.

The two bands finally wrapped up Let It Bleed last night, with American Jubilee knocking out “You Got the Silver” and “Monkey Man” during their set, and Phil and Friends performing the album’s final track, “You Can’t Always Get You Want,” during their show. The band also treated fans to an extra Stones tune during the second set when they went into “Brown Sugar.”

Interestingly, last night’s show was preceded by a warning from Phil Lesh, who posted about the heavy police presence around the venue on his Facebook page. The bassist posted a statement that read:

The heat is out in force trying to bust people, regardless of whether you’re smiling on a cloudy day or not. Be cautious at the Best Buy Phil Lesh and Friends shows this week. We’ve heard of some aggressive, over-the-top police tactics going down in NYC. Use common sense, and know that you’re a target. We want everyone to have a great time.

Phil Lesh and Friends and American Jubilee will return to the Best Buy Theater tonight for the third show of their five night run at the venue.
