John Lurie has announced that he will release a collection of out-of-print studio tracks and previously unreleased live recordings from his early 90s trio, the John Lurie National Orchestra, which consisted of Lurie and percussionists Billy Martin and G. Calvin Weston. The album, titled The Invention of Animals, will hit stores on January 21.

The album’s 19-minute centerpiece and title track was captured by acclaimed sound engineer Claudia Engelhart from a February 12, 1994 performance in Thessaloniki, Greece.

“The three of us got together to try and write stuff for my band The Lounge Lizards, but what happened between Billy, Calvin and I was magical,” Lurie says of the release. “There is something so unique and beautiful about this music. I don’t think there is anything else like it.”

The album will be available on all digital formats and limited edition 180-gram vinyl on Martin’s own Amulet Records. The release will also feature an original John Lurie painting as cover art.
