Both of Leftover Salmon’s headlining shows at this year’s Strings and Sol featured sit-ins galore from a handful of musicians picked from the festival’s other performers.

Fellow event performer Keller Williams, as well as members of festival acts Railroad Earth and the Travelin’ McCourys sat in for the band’s first night on multiple songs, which included both covers and Salmon originals. Little Feat’s Bill Payne sat in with the band for the entire night, including covers of Little Feat’s “Fat Man in the Bathtub” and the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower.” Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band joined Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone, Robbie and Ronnie McCoury, and Tim Payne for an encore of John Hartford’s “Way Up on the Hill Where They Do the Boogie.”

On the second night of the band’s performances at the festival – set under the sun on the shores of Puerto Morales, Mexico – Salmon continued the sit-in trend by inviting back Bill Payne for the whole show again, this time digging into the keyboardist’s catalog to play Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken.” The second night of Salmon also saw Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass sit in on Dobro for a few tunes while Vince Herman’s own son, Silas Herman, joined his father’s band on mandolin for a take on “Ain’t Gonna Work.”

Following a sit-in heavy and overall gorgeously set festival performance, the band is offering up most of their Strings and Sol performances for download for free through LiveSalmon.com.

Payne will perform with Leftover Salmon throughout their New Year’s run. That tour includes stops at Park City, UT’s Park City Live (12/28-29) and Seattle, WA’s Neptune Theater (12/30-31).
