Connecticut’s Kung Fu hosted their third-annual Toys for Tots benefit at New Haven, CT’s Toad’s Place on Saturday night. Indie-funk band The Stepkids and rising Castleton, VT jamband Twiddle opened the night. In total, the bands collected over $6,000 for Yale’s Children’s hospital, and the members of the Kung Fu personally delivered the gifts to the hospital this morning.

Members of both opening acts also sat in with Kung Fu during their headlining set. Early in the night, Kung Fu invited out Twiddle guitarist Mihali Savoulidis for a cover of Parliament-Funkadelic’s “Good to Your Earhole.” A bit later, horn players Aaron Eaddy and Tommy Weeks, of the Connecticut-based, New Orleans-inspired Funky Dawgz Brass Band, emerged for a take on “Back Door Santa.” Finally, all three members of The Stepkids took the stage with Kung Fu for funky versions of “This is Christmas” and The Temptations’ arrangement of “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

Kung Fu’s New Year’s run begins with a post-Phish show at at New York’s BB King’s Blues Club on December 29. (At that show, the band will play two rotating sets with Dopapod.) On December 31, the band will close 2013 at Fairfield, CT’s Stage One with special guests The Heavy Pets. Kung Fu will also debut songs from their new unreleased record TSAR BOMBA on SiriusXM Jam_On on December 30 at 2pm EST.
