The Wire Creator David Simon Working on Musical About The Pogues

David Simon, best known for creating HBO series The Wire and Treme, has announced that his next project will be a new stage musical based on the iconic Irish folk-punk band The Pogues. Simon has reportedly turned in a first draft of a script for the musical, which is expected to be centered on the lyrical content of Pogues’ songs. Additional details have yet to be confirmed.

It should come as no surprise that the drama writer is an avid fan of the band; The Pogues’ music has appeared in multiple episodes of The Wire, and Spider Stacy—Pogues vocalist/tinwhistle player—plays James “Slim Jim” Lynch on Treme.

This should be pretty interesting to see since much of their original songs are lyrically beautiful. I know that there was a short set of graphic novels that were based around the Pogues song “Thousands are Sailing” that came out a year or two ago, telling the stories of Irish immigrants from three different eras from the Famine to the 1980s.

I pity the sod who’s got to play Shane. Is he gonna yank all ‘is teef out for the role? All kidding aside, it would be quite demanding to have to summon the energy to play him night after night.

The musical is not “about” The Pogues. It’s an original story told via the the band’s music.
