Ivan Neville, Joshua Redman, Jaden Carlson Sit In with Umphrey’s McGee in Denver

Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville, saxophonist Joshua Redman and guitarist Jaden Carlson sat in with Umphrey’s McGee during their performance at The Fillmore Auditorium in Denver last night. Neville hopped in on keys for “Dump City” to end the first set, while Redman joined in for the entirety of the second set and the encore, including the band’s first ever cover of Weather Report’s “River People.” Umphrey’s and Redman also got some help from local guitarist Jaden Carlson, who replaced Brendan Bayliss during the second half of “Der Bluten Kat.”

Interesting show to say the least. What struck me was how much room there was and that maybe UM needs to do smaller venues besides for the actual Holiday show. Without Redman this show would have been awful, but he made it ok to the 40% full Fillmore. Luckily the boys are using the flood disaster to make money for themselves (Only donating 15 bucks of a 200 buck ticket LOL) cuz it was not a good night for them. We were laughing that they played flamethrower and Plunger in the same set given half their fanbase. I mean two guys asked me for my number at the bar and I was with my wife!! Whatevs we thought it was funny. Lots has changed since UM was a bigger band 07-09. Less fire less fans and some perfectly fine guys looking for digits. See you next time you are 10 mins from my house boys.

Interesting you think the venue was only 40% full? I work there and it was about 75% capacity last night. If anything they have grown, esp in CO, in the last 5 years. Looking forward to the sell out tomorrow night!

It was interesting. I remember the days when they were sold out each night of their New Years run at a bigger Venue, so seeing how few shows they sell out now must suck for them. I don’t really care though. Last night was a blast. I would love that kind of wide open space at all shows, but I’m sure the band wasn’t looking for that. They have one show sold out on their next tour. The 1000 seat GA theatre on a large college campus. If this is explosive growth and awesome kudos. Phish did Clifford Ball, The Went, Oswego and Cypress at his point in their careers, but I am sure they only care about the art.
