Robby Krieger, Jimmy Vivino and More Join Gov’t Mule in NYC

Last night, Gov’t Mule got some help from a few different friends during the first show of their two-night run at the Beacon Theatre in New York. In a surprise move, the Mule kicked off their first with the debut performance of the new Shout! track “Done Got Wise.”

The sit ins began to take shape early in the second set, when guitarist Jeff Young joined Mule for “Don’t Take Me Alive.” The tune was followed by “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” which featured guest appearances by Conan bandleader Jimmy Vivino and Late Show saxophonist Aaron Heick. Heick then stuck around for “Slackjaw Jezebel” before Matt Abts handed his kit over to Carmine Appice for a drum jam Vivino and Young and returned to make their mark on “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” The set then closed with sit ins from Vintage Trouble’s Nalle Colt and Ty Taylor, who joined the band for “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and “Bring On The Music,” respectively.

Continuing Mule’s Halloween theme, The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger took the stage with the band for their encore. Krieger—who is scheduled to play a number of The Doors covers with the band during tonight New Year’s Eve show—made his contribution to “The Changeling,” “Cars Hiss By My Window” and “Five to One.”

Gov’t Mule will wrap up their New Year’s run with another performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York City tonight.

That people would rather go see Phish at the Garden than this is beyond me

Phish is okay if you take lots of drugs.

On a different night I might have chosen mule over phish but the mule crowd it too geriatric for me to celebrate NYE with. Made that mistake like 3 or 4 years ago – never again
