Phil Lesh welcomed John Kadlecik, Anders Osborne, Jeff Chimenti and Tony Leone to the stage for four sets of music last night at Terrapin Crossroads. The evening began early as Phil and Friends first took the stage in the Grate Room shortly after 8:30. The five musicians were joined by Emily Sunderland for the opening “Ship of Fools,” the version of “In The Midnight Hour” that followed (as it approached midnight back on the East Coast) and later for the set-closing “Gimme Shelter.” All told Lesh and his group would perform four sets at his San Rafael, CA venue, with additional guests and a Grateful Dead tradition in the offing as well. A segue-laden set two extended from 10:10 and lasted until 11:15, built on a sequence that included “Terrapin Station,” “Dark Star,” “Unbroken Chain,” “All Along The Watchtower” and “Rockin’ In The Free World.” The new year arrived during the beginning of set three, as a float entered Terrapin Crossroads, with Sunderland atop, while a version of “Ship of Fools” played in the club and Bill Walton took the stage as Father Time for the New Year’s countdown. The music that followed saw “Playing In The Band” and “Turn on Your Lovelight” sandwich a version of “Sugaree.” The night didn’t end there, however, as the group returned for a fourth and final set that saw Ross James lend vocals and guitar to “New Minglewood Blues” while Brian Lesh did the same during “Mountain Song.” The evening finally concluded five and a half hours after it began as “Eyes of the World” led into “Touch of Grey” and then a “Ship of Fools Reprise.”
