Umphrey’s McGee got some help from the Mad Dog’s Filthy Secret horns as they debuted a number of new covers and a new original song during their three-set New Year’s Eve performance at The Fillmore Auditorium in Denver last night.

The first set got going with “Le Blitz”—a recent addition to the Umphrey’s canon that the band premiered back in May—before the band moved on to classics such as “Phil’s Farm” and “Ocean Billy,” as well as the heavy hitter “Wizard’s Burial Ground.” The set then came to a close as the Mad Dog’s Filthy Secret horns joined Umphrey’s on stage for the debut of their new original tune “Bad Friday.”

The band returned for a second set that kicked off with a “40’s Theme” and “13 Days” that featured the Mad Dog’s Filthy Secret horns. The guests then exited before the band went into their first-ever rendition of Golden Earring’s “Twilight Zone,” followed by a “Pay The Snucka” that included teases of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” The horns then reappeared for “Booth Love” and “No Diablo” before helping Umphrey’s wrap up the set with a debut cover of Phil Collins’ “Sussudio.”

The horns stayed on hand for the entirety of the night’ third set, which saw the band play the crowd into the New Year with a “Hurt Bird Bath” that segued into “Auld Lang Syne.” The band’ then premiered a cover of Funkadelic’s “Hit it and Quit It,” which was followed by “Wappy Sprayberry” and a “Jimmy Stewart”-style “Miss Tinkle’s Overture.” The set ended with a “Bridgelss” that was sandwiched around the band’s first-ever take on Howard Jones’ “Things Can Only Get Better.” The encore version of “Resolution” featured an “Auld Lang Syne” jam before the night came to a close with a debut cover of Kool & The Gang’s “Funky Stuff.”

Umphrey’s McGee will return to the stage on January 17 and 18 for a special two-night run at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
