Bruce Springsteen Looking Into Live Recording Releases

It looks like Bruce Springsteen might be taking a page out of the jamband playbook soon. Fans of The Boss—who is is famous for, among many other things, his exuberant and extensive live shows—may get the chance to download recordings of his concerts immediately following the performance. Rolling Stone reports that Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau leaked the news to at SiriusXM headquarters while Springsteen appeared on E Street Radio.

While live E Street Band concerts are readily available as bootlegs to anyone with a computer or satellite radio, Springsteen has thus far been hesitant to release many official live recordings. However, if the Springsteen camp follows through on this idea, high quality audio downloads could be instantly available to fans as soon as the band resumes their broad tour later this month with a series of shows in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Springsteen will release his latest album, High Hopes, this Tuesday, January 14.

In this day and age, given that CD sales are all but dried up, I can’t understand why any band that doesn’t outright suck live would not do this! Even bands that play the same set every night would make money because their fans are likely not touring with them, so they would want a copy of what they saw/heard that particular night… and maybe one or two extras where something unique happened. Whether the ticket price goes up a bit, or the show is available for purchase, it would make the band money, the fans happy and keeps the fans listening to the band which helps future ticket sales… I can’t imagine how the band loses! I saw Black Sabbath last summer in Virginia and stealth taped it… I would have left my gear home and paid $10-15 for a board FLAC just for the memories… I was (still am) a huge SRV fan and can only dream of being able to get boards of shows… you never know when it’s your last day… Jerry fans are certainly thankful for all of the shows!
